Can you Dig it??

While some dogs might not like swimming, most dogs find something that excites them about the beach. I often think that the digging dogs just dig because it feels good. When Molly, my JRT, digs there is a reason, often it is a sand crab she has run to ground.

Seems like many dig just to dig , or maybe like this greyhound, they like an audience!

Salty Dog Shih!

Even dogs that you think might not like the beach, enjoy being with their humans. This sandy Shih Tzu might need a bath when he gets home but time on the beach makes it worth it!

Getting Mauled is Fun??

Some dogs idea of fun at the beach is spending their time wrestling other dogs. These two are housemates but some times other dogs will want to play rough with your dog. Watch what is going on, and take your dog on down the beach if he is being overwhelmed! Make the beach fun for your dog.

Monday's Guest- Maverick- a Rat Terrier!

Maverick is our 8 year-old Rat Terrier and we had him since a pup. At home, he spends most of his time chasing squirrels in the backyard, barking at passing trucks, or just snoozing in the sun. We occasionally take him to the dog friendly beach in Carmel, CA but it's usually too cold and he hates the cold. So, when we do have the opportunity, we take him on vacation with us by driving down to San Diego. The San Diego Dog Beach is usually warm and hopping with dogs of all sizes. At first, Maverick is usually timid about going into the water and is satisfied just chasing other dogs along the water's edge. But after watching his furry friends having a wet and wild time, he ventures in slowly and ultimately goes full-bore having a splashing good time playing in the waves and fetching tennis balls thrown into the water. After hours of fun,Maverick is usually exhausted and look forward to a satisfying nap back at the hotel.- AV

A new Salty Dog!

While Brooklyn’s first visit to the beach didn’t include retrieving in the surf, it did include a great time for both her and owner Melissa. Melissa grew up spending the summers at New Silver Beach in Cape Cod. “It made me happy to bring her here and see her have such a great time. She kept bringing me seashells and seaweed. She was nervous of the ocean and the waves freaked her out! She’d see a shell or rock she wanted and go to get it just as a wave was coming back in. She would jump back, bark then take off running at the water’s edge. We look forward to taking her again,” says Melissa.

Down Under Salty Dogs!

The fun thing about the internet is that you can meet people you would never have contact with otherwise. When I met Tania at the dogster group for greyhounds, we realized that we had something in common. She works for my publisher,Wiley AU, and even knew about my book Salty Dogs! She told me how much her own dogs love the beach and sent me some pics of her crew getting down and sandy. I thought everyone might enjoy seeing down under salty dogs!

Here are two pics of Jake her greyhound , I love the sandy nose shot, tho I know where that sand will land when he licks his nose! I am always wiping the sand off of Molly's nose so she doesnt ingest it!

Here is Mac- Australian Kelpie (Smoke blue/grey boy) and Ivy- Kelpie X (Black smaller girl)
"These are my four legged friends on holiday's with me last year at a dog beach called Woodside. This is a dog friendly beach is located along the 90 mile beach in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia ," says Tania

Greyhounds Reach the Beach!

Last weekend, Molly and I were at Dewey Beach DE doing a book signing for Salty Dogs. Here is Tink who I photographed about eight years ago at Reach the Beach. It was just a random shot I took that ended up being in the book and I had no idea who the owner was. I posted the pic to the greyhound forum and bingo someone knew Tink ! It was fun seeing them both again!

Greyhounds were everywhere on the beach , even on the foggy morning .

Meet and greet was the order of the day!
